DESIGN +
For centuries, stories of history and culture from the exotic east travelled and transformed along the Silk Route like ‘Chinese Whispers.’

Among these was the story of ‘The Willow,’ an ancient Chinese fable. The folktale is about a wealthy merchant’s daughter who chooses an accountant over a duke and the pattern depicts this story of a runaway bride including the obstacles and sights the lovers encounter and overcome.

The iconic Willow Pattern was created by British illustrator Thomas Minton in the 18th century, when chinoiserie was at its zenith. It was a quintessential image of oriental fantasy which resonated with European ideals of romance.

Though the Willow has its roots in ancient Chinese folklore, we felt the elements are also familiar to the natural landscape and romantic culture of Kashmir. So we collaborated with the Naqashi masters of Srinagar to create our own rendition of this classic pattern.
CRAFT +
Hand painted box, crafted from a blend of papier-mâché and wood.

Though the Willow has its roots in ancient Chinese folklore, we felt the elements are also familiar to the natural landscape and romantic culture of Kashmir. So we collaborated with the Naqashi masters of Srinagar to create our own rendition of this classic pattern.

By coalescing Kashmiri artisan traditions with the classic chinoiserie story, we reimagined a timeless tale of star-crossed lovers on the world’s finest papier mache.

Our Naqashi designs retain the spirit and vocabulary of this exquisite tradition, but are more contemporary in scale, thereby reducing the strain on artisans’ the eyes.

It takes 45 processes over 60 days for each piece to go from refuse paper to art décor and 4 months to reach from our hearts to your home:

+ 4 weeks from research to render + 2 weeks from mud to mould + 5 weeks from paper pulp to bowl + 1 week of naqashi painting

Dimensions: Length: 9", Width: 6", Height: 2"

Product Care : Clean with a soft dry cloth.
The beauty of Naqashi papier-mache lies in its fine handpainted artwork, so take care not to wet the box to avoid imperfections.
